Nalanda University Nalanda International University is the name of a proposed university in Nalanda, Bihar based on the ideal of the ancient university once situated there. It is a dream project of the former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam.[1] Japan and Singapore have shown interest in financing the construction work, with contributions totalling around $100 million. Recently China alone has donated 1 billion US dollar with pledge to support NIU cause at every level.[2] Gopa Sabharwal has been appointed the first Vice Chancellor of this university in February 2011. The State Government of Bihar handed over 443 acres of sprawling land acquired from local people, to the University, where war level construction work has been initiated. The University is expected to be functional from year 2012. It is supposed to be Asia's biggest and most reputed university with only one of its kind. [edit]A Nalanda mentor group headed by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and comprising Meghnad Desai, Nand Kishore Singh (Planning Commission, Government of Bihar), Sugata Bose, Wang Banwei (Beijing University), Ikuo Hirayama, George Yeo and Tansen Sen will meet during the next East Asian Summit in 2009 to evaluate the proposed project.[3] |
