Question 582: Franky my dear, i don't give a damn

__X___ was a German physicist who resided in Russia. In 1741 he was elected a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Science for his pioneering work on __Y__ and also on calorimetry. __X__also worked as a tutor of the children of Count Andrei Osterman. In 1741 he translated Alexander Pope's Essay on Man into German from French.

He died in St. Petersburg "while trying to quantify the response of an insulated rod to a nearby weather phenomenon." He was attending a meeting of the Academy of Sciences, when he heard an ancient source of __Y__. The Professor ran home with his engraver to capture the event for posterity. While the experiment was underway, a supposed ____ appeared and collided with _______s head leaving him dead in a red spot. His shoes were blown open, parts of his clothes singed, the engraver knocked out; the doorframe of the room was split, and the door itself torn off its hinges.

He was apparently the first person in history to die while conducting __Y__ experiments.

However, the experiment he was conducting was already done so a few years earlier, halfway around the world, raising doubts about the veracity of those experiments conducted by the person halfway around the world.

Death of X

Death of X in colour,lol

So:
1) ID X
2) ID Y and the experiment X or the person before him conducted.
The key to this lies in the picture.

Question 579: Man is a self sufficient being

I want more

Cheers?

Id him.

Question 578: Dangling Angles

The ______X______  test was used by the British Board of Film Classification in the United Kingdom, unofficially, as a guideline to decide whether to permit an erect human phallus in the general release of a film or video. The test was held as a comparison to measure the erect phallus to the point that the angle it made from the vertical (the "angle of the dangle", as it was often known) was larger than that of the promontory at the southermost end of a popular physical formation in Scotland.

According to writer Emily Dubberley, the rule hampered the 1990s trend toward feminist pornography; since "you couldn't show a man in a state of arousal", the allowed depiction was "hardly a turn-on", and she criticized it as a double standard that was permitted due to the perception that women did not respond to visual erotic stimuli.

Deviance from South-Centre

Name the __X__ Test.

Question 577: The Inspector

An American born Scot. What must that be like? Phew.
He tried many things, but then fate decided that packing meat was his destiny. And he prospered.
His biggest moment came in the war of 1812, the one about all the American-British empire thing..

The chap in question managed to get the commission to supply meat to the army!
Good for him.
On each little box of Meat, there was, as you'd expect, 'U.S' printed on it, as they were govt property.
He insisted U.S was United States. But the soldiers said it stood for something else(Their own little joke, of course)
I want to know what it was that the Soldiers said. The term's damned famous now, so you'd have heard of it.

And ID the man.

Question 576: Proof kahan hai?

X

Y

Z

X was an idea put forth by a very generally awesome man (although I don't personally appreciate the usage of the idea, I still think he's pretty cool).
Y and Z sort of picked up on it later on.

The theory of Z actually has a name coined for it.

So give me:
1. X, Y and Z

2. The name of the generally awesome man

3. What Z is a parody of

4. The name coined for Z

2 points per part plus a bonus of 2 for getting all four.
So 10 points in total.
Also, my Hindi (and possibly everyone else's) is better than Pai's.
Just saying.

Question 574: Dress it and then address it

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
As lang's my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
His knife see rustic Labour dicht,
An' cut you up wi' ready slicht,
Trenching your gushing entrails bricht,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sicht,
Warm-reekin, rich!
Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmaist! on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve,
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
"Bethankit" hums.
Is there that o're his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi' perfect scunner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
On sic a dinner?
Poor devil! see him ower his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Thro' bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!
But mark the Rustic, ______ fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his wallie nieve a blade,
He'll mak it whistle;
An' legs an' arms, an' heads will sned,
Like taps o' thristle.
Ye Pow'rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinkin ware

Question 571: Egypt's Karma?

__X__ comprises a vast mix of ruined temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings, notably the Great Temple of Amun and a massive structure begun by Pharaoh Ramses II(ca. 1391–1351 BC). Sacred Lake is part of the site as well. It is located near Luxor, some 500 km south of Cairo, in Egypt. The area around __X__ was the ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut ("The Most Selected of Places") and the main place of worship of the eighteenth dynasty Theban Triad with the god Amun as its head. It is part of the monumental city of Thebes. The __X__ complex takes its name from the nearby, and partly surrounded, modern village of el-__X___, some 2.5 km north of Luxor.

The history of the __X___ complex is largely the history of Thebes and its changing role in the culture. The earliest known artifact found in the area of the temple is a small, eight-sided temple from the Eleventh Dynasty, which mentions Amun-Re. Amun (sometimes called Amen) was long the local tutelary deity of Thebes. He was identified with the Ram and the Goose. The Egyptian meaning of Amen is, "hidden" or, the "hidden god".

It hasn't been as significant a tourist site as The pyramids of Giza, etc, but it rose to prominence it 2001 and once again in 2009.
So:
1) ID X
2) ID why it rose to prominence in those years.

Question 569: Yes We Mccann

A very late question (a month old i guess), but i just found out about it and im posting it on both blogs
The Quizzard & Another Blog in The Wall.

This is an excerpt of an episode from CSI, im not going to tell you when it was aired.
It features the return of a very popular character, the synopsis is as such.

The character ___X___, played by ___Y___, is a troubled teen worried about his brother.

It begins with __Y__ warning Stokes not to enter his house as it may be booby trapped (the irony of this phrase chosen will come to light when you crack the question). Stokes enters either ways, finds out that its a bomb, gets extracted by CSI squad, & is grateful to __Y__.

Although Stokes tries to interrogate __Y__ about the attempted house bombing, the teen remains tight-lipped about who the perpetrator is, and he's eventually picked up by his legal guardian. Soon after, the CSIs pay a visit to  __Y__'s guardian, only to find him dead inside his work warehouse. Unfortunately, beneath his dead body is a device that traps Stokes and his team inside the building as a bomb surrounded by lasers ticks away.

Greg and Sara find a surveillance video of  __Y__ buying bomb-making supplies with an accomplice: Timothy Johnson, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist who was dishonorably discharged from the Army several years ago. Nick realizes that  __Y__ has been playing him, and Sara points out that he, Catherine and Vartann were the ones who killed  __Y__s brother—and they were the ones trapped in the booby-trapped building. Nick and Greg work to track  __Y__ by calling his cellphone, and they are able to locate his general area. The cops set up a roadblock and stop the van containing  __Y__ and Johnson as they try to escape to California. Johnson would rather give up than die, but Jason has other ideas.

He yells that Johnson has a bomb on his body, and during the momentary confusion, __Y__ pulls out a gun and shoots one of the cops . Nick and the others return fire, killing __Y__ in a hail of bullets, as his corpse floats like a feather before gracing the sweet ground.

SImply ID X & Y.
The reason why this became famous will immediately come to light then

The lady ____X____, now infamous for having had a long-standing affair with ___Y____, was the feature of much speculation when a popular international magazine published a series of never-before-seen photographs recently. The series included much of __X's__ life prior to meeting __Y__ (23 years her senior), while modeling for publicity photographs. It also included some very intimate photographs of __Y's__ private life, a perspective that very few could afford until recently.

Mine Bonny lies over the wall

She is also notorious for resorting to several (as many as 4 documented) attempts at suicide (failed, obviously) to maintain __Y's__ undivided attention to her; something he could not afford given his well known proclivities. He kept her hidden from public knowledge, so much so that the public did not know of her until their joint and untimely death. In fact, the only time she made a public appearance with him was as his "secretary", at the House, to her family's utter disappointment. He eventually married her when he was 56, and she was 33, in a hasty civil ceremony; only 40 hours before their deliberate deaths.

She is potrayed as one of the most interesting characters in a graphic comic series by the well-known Osamu Tezuka (of Astroboy fame) in the 1990s, dramatizing __Y's__ life (loosely).

Give me X and Y.

P.S. - sorry about the late answer on Question 551 - check the answer out for a special treat.

Question 565: On Jordan's Bank the Baptist Cry

Belated OScar Question, since i had no idea when it was due to that stupid pre WC coverage

__X__ is the story of Thiery Guetta, and his love. In the film, he hears about the urban legend __Y__ and tries to contact him. After many a failed attempt, he finally does and for the rest you need to watch __X__, and not spoil the surprise; partly coz i haven't seen __X__ or __Y__ either, lol.
__Y__'s manager had this to say about __X__:
"I think the joke is on... I don’t know who the joke is on, really. I don’t even know if there is a joke."
__Y___'s former spokesman

On __Y__ and the choices of __Y__, it can best be summed up in his own words:
"When you go to an art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires."
– __Y___

So:
1) Give me X
2) & Y
Brownie points for what it is Y does
