Q 779: Blue is the Colour

Pierre Culliford was better known as _____, his Pseudonym. _____ was assumed as his pseudonym based on his English cousin's mispronunciation of "Pierre".

He had a Belgian mother and an English father, and soon got into cartooning, if you can call it that way.
He went on to create a series called Johan and Peewit, which is based in the middle ages, where Johan protects the meek on his trusty horse while Peewit gallops behind on his goat.

But the aforementioned work of genius wasn't what ____ was known for.

__X__ went on to create ___Y___, which shot to fame in damned quick time. A new series altogether was started for __Y__, and, even today, is popular in England, Germany, France, etc, etc.
__Y__ was once in a restaurant, and he momentarily forgot the word for "Salt", __Y__ asked the waiter to pass him the "Schroumpf" in French.
A joke ensued and they talked in "Schroumpf" language for the next two weeks.
The rest is history.

Q 778: The Pride of England

This is something that happened in the year 1985, rather, one of two HUGE events in the music world dedicated to a cause(mostly in Africa at that time). It featured all the biggies.

Call this __Z__.

Now, there came this band __X___ who played for some 20 odd minutes.
Some regard this little cameo to be their crowning glory, or at least that of their front man. They started off with one of their huge hits, __Y__ but there were rules pre-set. The event did not allow

  • Sound-checks.
  • Playback of previously recorded pieces.
Owing to these difficulties, __Y__ couldn't be played to completion.
So, they mixed things up and played another hugely popular song, and incidentally, the name of which inspired a crazy "female" to kick start her musical career.

In spite of the risks of messing up existing, the band went on to steal the show.

Q 777: The Pendulum Swings To & Fro

X

This particular term that I'm looking for comes from "___". The term's origin/root essentially means "Regarding the Head" in Latin.
__X__ has been practiced by most civilizations at some point of time or the other, with the exception of the Kyivian Rus(European tribe that was disintegrated by the Mongol Invasion in the 13th Century).

The current scenario, however, is different.
58 Nations are advocates of __X__ and 96 have decided to do away with the concept altogether.
There is of course this raging debate on __X__ on many fronts.

The European Union has collectively distanced itself away from it, as Article 2 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU prohibits it.

In the UNGA, The People's Republic of China, India, the USA and Indonesia have all voted against the removal of __X___, and they being the 4t most populated countries in the world.

Question 771: The Kid

Born in Turin, and nicknamed "__", X was a doctor of engineering and nephew of Pinin _____ of the coach building company. He began his motor racing career in hillclimbs, graduating to circuit racing with Maserati. But it was not until he moved to Alfa Romeo, as number two driver to Tazio Nuvolari, that his racing career really blossomed. During the late 1930s he won numerous minor races in the Voiturette class, securing himself the Italian Drivers' Champion three years in a row (1937–1939). He then went on to take his first major race win, at the 1940 Tripoli GP. Sadly for _X_, he was just reaching his peak as a driver at the outbreak of World War II, and it would be another eight years before he would win a major race.
Entering post-war Grands Prix in a privately owned Maserati, __X__ took a win at the 1948 Monaco GP. When the FIA announced the inaugural World Championship for 1950, __X___ secured a drive alongside Juan Fangio and countryman Kuigi Fagioli at the dominant Alfa Romeo team, driving the invincible 158 Alfetta cars. __X____ took 3 wins from the 7 races of the 1950 season, securing himself the first ever World Championship. Question 770: Gun-go Goodies

The name "__X__" is a literary reference to the poem __X__ by Rudyard Kipling. The poem is a rhyming narrative from the point of view of a British soldier, about a native water-bearer (a "bhisti") who saves the soldier's life but dies himself.
This poem is perhaps best known for its often-quoted last stanza:
"Tho' I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, __X__!"
Like several Kipling poems, it celebrates the virtues of a non-European while revealing the racism of a colonial infantryman who views people such as the native water-bearer as being of a "lower order". The poem was published as one of the set of martial poems called the Barrack-Room Ballads.

Question 768: Holy Mother of God

The Common Basilisk can be distinguished from similar species within its range by its large size and the high finlike crests down its back. Males also have high crests on the head and tail. Both sexes are brown to olive, and have a white, cream or yellow stripe on the upper lip and a second stripe along either side of its body; these stripes have higher contrast in juveniles and fade as the lizards age. Hatchlings weigh a mere 2 g and are 37 to 43 mm long. Adults can grow up to two and a half feet long. Females are generally 135 to 194 and weigh half as much as males. The tails of these lizards comprise 70 to 75% of their total length: for example, on an 800 mm (or 31.5 in) long lizard, 600 mm of its length is tail.
The common basilisk has a large mouth with saw-like teeth that are on the inner sides of the jaw. They have been known to run up to 7 mph (11 km/h). While the basilisk is most known for its ability to run on water, they are also excellent climbers and swimmers; the basilisk has been known to stay underwater for up to half an hour. The average lifespan is 7 years in captivity; in the wild it tends to be less because of predators.

Thus it has earned the name __X__

Question 761: Winning's in their blood

Borrowed from the world of gambling, __X__ is a term used to describe stocks of a company with a national reputation for quality, reliability and the ability to operate profitably in good times and bad.
Based on the idea that different tokens dictate different values ranging from lowest to highest, the phrase was coined by Oliver Gingold of Dow Jones sometime in 1923 or 1924. Company folklore recounts that the term apparently got its start when Gingold was standing by the stock ticker at the brokerage firm that later became Merrill Lynch. Noticing several trades at USD$200 or USD$250 a share or more, he said to Lucien Hooper of W.E. Hutton & Co. that he intended to return to the office to "write about these __X__ stocks." Thus the phrase was born. It has been in use ever since, originally in reference to high-priced stocks, more commonly used today to refer to high-quality stocks.

Question 749: When I Come Around

The company was six months from insolvency, and morale was at an all-time low. There were warring factions and fiefdoms pitting any number of internal groups against each other, with each assigning blame for the company’s slow demise. The returning (temporarily) interim CEO began cutting irrelevant products, projects and partnerships to streamline the company to a spartan group of products.

He selected a project that was an extension of the very first product the company released. It was in a very infant stage and it would wind up barely resembling what was originally envisioned. The vision was a radical design, a departure from just about anything else in the market.

There was no name for this product and the CEO felt that it would be extremely important to have a relatable name, something that didn't deviate from their original methodology, but pushed through their revolutionarily new TBWA\Chiat\Day-designed ad campaign.

After much back-and-forth between the visionary CEO and the creative branding genius, the new name __X__ for the product reverberated so much within the company and then out to the industry and the consumer world, that it has defined and stuck with every new product introduced by the company since then. It has represented the ease of access to the internet, the interestingly refreshing design methodologies used to create new niche markets and has become a techno-cultural platitude (almost).

What is this name, __X__ ?

Prejudice

In this modern freespoken society
There is a word that we still hold taboo

Just six seemingly harmless letters arranged in a way will form a word
With more power than the pieces of metal that are forged to make swords

Just six little letters all jumbled together have caused damage that we may never mend
And it's important that we all respect that if these people should happen to choose to reclaim the word as their own it doesn't mean the rest of you have a right to its use
So never underestimate
The power that language imparts
Sticks and stones may break your bones but words can break hearts

An I and an N, in the end it will only offend, don't want to have to spell it out again

___Y___
_____Z____

They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

I saw a man walk into my camera viewfinder from the left. He took a pistol out of his holster and raised it. I had no idea he would shoot. It was common to hold a pistol to the head of prisoners during questioning. So I prepared to make that picture - the threat, the interrogation. But it didn't happen. Question 722: Couldn't keep this doc away

Description of the painting by the artist __X__

At least it hides the face partly. Well, so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present
Made famous by the movie "The Thomas Crown Affair", this painting has been extensively parodied by apple maniacs.
