Question 662: Armageddon out of here

The phrase __X__ has been in constant use since the advent of geography. However, the application of this moniker to the Elk RIver in Virginia came about in W.E.R. Byrne's book, "Tales of the Elk":

"The Elk river, seventy miles above its mouth at Charleston, in that wildly picturesque portion of central West Virginia, makes an abrupt bend in its course, where the waters, now with impetuous rush, now in placid pool, are baffled and turned to the right in a graceful semi-circular sweep of almost a mile, by beetling cliffs rising sheer from the river level, to an elevation of several hundred feet. These cliffs and their huge rocks, which, in the ages, have fallen away and found lodgment in and along the side of the stream, to the pioneer raftsman, as his craft swept into the curve from upriver, gave the distinct impression of having reached an insuperable barrier to his further progress - a cul-de-sac, or the jumping-off place; hence from the earliest history of the country, that locality has been called, and still bears the name -____X___".

So ID X

Question 602 a: HERtache!

Our second theme, the easier one, we hope! :)
ID X, Y, Z

When ___X____ landed the ______ received him warmly and ___Y____ came to his ship to greet him. Upon hearing his request, she agreed to let him take the ______. ___Z___, however, was not pleased, as was often the case with __X__. To stop him, ___Z____ came down to the Amazons disguised as one of their own and ran through the land, crying that ___X____ meant to kidnap their queen. Probably remembering all too well what Theseus had done, the Amazons charged toward the ship to save ___Y____. Fearing that ____Y____ had betrayed him, ____X_____ kissed her briefly then hastily killed her, ripped the ______ from her lifeless body, and set sail, narrowly escaping the raging warriors.
An alternate story of ___Y's___ death involved her sister. Her sister had killed __Y____ with a spear by accident when they were hunting deer; this accident caused  so much grief that she wished only to die, but, as a warrior and an Amazon, she had to do so honorably and in battle. She therefore was easily convinced to join in the Trojan War, fighting on the side of Troy's defenders, where she was killed by Achilles, who almost immediately afterward regretted doing so.

Question 519: Oh my gawsh! Can this be True? Seems pretty Super!

This is the author’s note for a certain unfinished work , __X__:

“The tale of ____Y____and____Z____ is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death. But this legend is, as shown by many features of the human tale, one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle. ___Y___  is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; ___Z___is the Divine Word, daughter of the Sun, goddess of the supreme Truth who comes down and is born to save; ________, the Lord of the Horse, her human father, is the Lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavour that helps us to rise from the mortal to the immortal planes; ________, Lord of the Shining Hosts, father of ___Y___, is the Divine Mind here fallen blind, losing its celestial kingdom of vision, and through that loss its kingdom of glory. Still this is not a mere allegory, the characters are not personified qualities, but incarnations or emanations of living and conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life."

__X__  is quite easily the greatest poetic work by the author, and is appreciated both for its poetic quality as well as its spiritual and philosophical content. Composed in a rhythmic hexameter, it consists of 24000 lines and deals with the history of man and the Gods – of the creation of the universe, its purpose and its destiny. The author stresses on the spiritual evolutionary philosophy of ___A___, which is built on the concept of self realisation and has been compared to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's concept of ___B___.

2. Identify Y and Z. ( They’re generally considered together and the break down was solely for the sake of simplification)

Question 512.f: A Date with Desire (ok, this maybe a little sexual)

The ___X____ do not contain sexual or erotic art inside the temple or near the deities; however, some external carvings bear erotic art. Also, some of the temples that have two layers of walls have small erotic carvings on the outside of the inner wall. There are many interpretations of the erotic carvings. They portray that, for seeing the deity, one must leave his or her sexual desires outside the temple. Some 10% of the carvings contain sexual themes; those reportedly do not show deities, they show sexual activities between people.

Another perspective of these carvings is presented by James McConnachie. In his history of the __Y___, McConnachie describes the zesty 10% of the ___X____ sculpture as "the apogee of erotic art": "Twisting, broad-hipped and high breasted nymphs display their generously contoured and bejewelled bodies on exquisitely worked exterior wall panels. These fleshy apsaras run riot across the surface of the stone, putting on make-up, washing their hair, playing games, dancing, and endlessly knotting and unknotting their girdles....Beside the heavenly nymphs are serried ranks of griffins, guardian deities and, most notoriously, extravagantly interlocked maithunas, or lovemaking couples."

Thus causing __X___ to also be known as the __Y__ temple.

Question:
1) ID X
2) ID Y

Question 512.b: Strictly non sexual

Yes, hard to believe when one hears the name __X__, but let me assure you that its strictly platonic, or atleast most of it is.
lol

__X__ comes from the anglicized name of the river upon whose banks it was built upon, the river being the Tungabhadra in Southern India. Although __X__ exists in the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, it actually predates it, being associated with the Vanara(monkey) kingdom mentioned in the Ramayan.

The site is significant historically and architecturally. The topography abounds with large stones which have been utilized to make larger than life statues of Hindu deities. A structure of historic importance appears every quarter of a mile. The Archaeological Survey of India continues to conduct excavations in the area, to discover additional artifacts and temple.

The principal industries of the village are agriculture, the support of the Virupaksha temple and some other local holy places in the vicinity, and tourism. The annual Vijayanagar Festival is organized by the Government of Karnataka in November.

I'll keep this straightforward

Question DII: Can't dance your way around this

A happy Republic Day to all.
Edward Abbey

Now on to the question

The picture below shows the extent of the kingdom of __X__, who is said to have unified the subcontinent under one kingdom.

In the Vedas, __X__ is described as follows

abhūtir eṣā kas tyajyāj jīvañ jīvantam ātmajam
śākuntalaṃ mahātmānaṃ dauḥṣantiṃ bhara paurava
bhartavyo 'yaṃ tvayā yasmād asmākaṃ vacanād api
tasmād bhavatv ayaṃ nāmnā bharato nāma te sutaḥ
Therefore, O thou of Puru's race, cherish thy high-souled son born of __Y__
and because this child is to be cherished by thee even at our word,
therefore shall this thy son be known by the name of ___X___.

But others argue that the __X__ race, an Ayan tribe mentioned in the Rigveda were successful against other Aryan and Non-Aryan tribes. Thus in the post Vedic tradition, they were deemed as conquerors of all, and hence all was known as __X__.

1) ID X
2) ID its contribution to the world today (exact answer required).

Question 486: Starry Eyed Surprise

__X__ is a large constellation located around the celestial equator. Its name is Greek (Ὀφιοῦχος) for 'serpent-bearer', and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. __X__ was one of the 48 constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius, Latin word meaning the same as its current name.

There exist a number of theories as to whom the figure represents.
The most recent interpretation is that the figure represents the healer Asclepius, who learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal under Asclepius' care, Zeus killed him with a bolt of lightning, but later placed his image in the heavens to honor his good works. It has also been noted that __X__ is close to that of _____, which has at times been believed to represent Chiron (the mentor of Asclepius and many other Greek demigods), though Chiron was originally associated with the constellation Centaurus.
Twitter users, of late, have been upbeat about this since its inclusion in the Zodiac will cause a change in all star signs, and most wonder if they were reading the wrong horoscope (if you're jobless enough to be on twitter, you're surely not jobless enough to how the stars millions of miles away will dictate whether you choose fudge or a brownie for lunch)
But getting back to the question
Id X

A list of the stars in __X__ is given below  (central editted part of the image)
